Shakepay Card is a Canadian prepaid Visa funded from the user's Canadian-dollar balance. It does not spend bitcoin directly. The crypto component is cashback paid in bitcoin after an eligible purchase settles.

The physical card is now live, but ordering is still rolling out by account and prior waitlist position. Every fully verified Canadian account can use the virtual card; physical availability should be checked in the app rather than assumed from the public announcement.

Funding and Card Format

Virtual card users can pay online or through Apple Pay and Google Pay. The physical card adds a conventional in-store fallback as ordering reaches each account. Shakepay says spending draws from the CAD balance, which can be funded through supported account rails such as Interac e-Transfer.

Crypto balances are not spent automatically. Bitcoin or other supported crypto must first be sold into CAD before it can fund a card purchase. This is a custodial prepaid account, not a self-custody spending card.

Cashback and Monthly Status

The current reward rate depends on monthly Shakepay status. Base and Bright users receive 1% bitcoin cashback on eligible card purchases. Blue users receive 1.5%.

Bright currently requires either $100 in eligible exchange activity or $200 in eligible direct deposits during the calendar month. Blue requires $1,000 in exchange activity or $2,000 in eligible direct deposits. Status activates when the threshold is met and remains for the following month, but continued eligibility depends on new activity.

Blue1.5% in bitcoin0%

Cashback excludes ATM withdrawals, account top-ups, bill payments, cash-equivalent transactions, securities and several financial merchant categories. Rewards can remain pending until the merchant settles the purchase.

Fees and Spending Limits

Shakepay lists no activation fee, no minimum balance and no annual fee. The important travel cost is the status-based FX fee: 3% for Base, 1.5% for Bright and 0% for Blue.

The published transaction limits are $5,000 CAD per purchase, $5,000 CAD per day and $50,000 CAD per month. Mobile-wallet tap limits can be lower at the merchant. The virtual card cannot be used at an ATM, and physical-card ATM availability and pricing should be confirmed in the app and current cardholder agreement.

Eligibility and Fit

Shakepay Card is available to fully verified Canadian residents across all 13 provinces and territories. It is a consumer product, not a corporate card. A Canadian business account does not turn it into an employee-card or spend-control program.

The card fits users who already maintain a Shakepay CAD balance and want simple bitcoin rewards. Blue can be more useful for travel because it removes Shakepay's published FX fee, but reaching Blue requires recurring monthly activity.

It is less suitable for non-Canadian users, self-custody spending, direct crypto settlement or people who would trade more crypto only to reach a marginally higher reward rate.

Decision

Compare the net result at the status you can maintain. Base gives a simple 1% bitcoin reward but charges 3% on foreign transactions. Blue raises cashback to 1.5% and removes that FX fee, yet its monthly qualification may not fit occasional users.

Pros

  • Good: Bitcoin cashback is straightforward and automatically paid to the Shakepay balance
  • Good: No annual fee and no credit check are stated on the public page
  • Good: Useful Canada-specific option with mobile wallet support

Cons

  • Watch: Canada-only availability
  • Watch: Cashback is not paid on ATM withdrawals or account top-ups
  • Watch: Base users pay a 3% foreign transaction fee, while physical-card ordering is still account-specific

Bottom line

Shakepay Card belongs on the shortlist only if its fees, regions, funding flow and KYC rules match how you plan to spend. Check the provider page before moving funds.
